VW picks Canada for first North American battery plant

Asian Tech Press (Dec 2) -- German automaker Volkswagen AG (VW) has chosen Canada to build its first North American battery plant.

Volkswagen and its battery subsidiary PowerCo SE have begun the process of selecting a site for its first battery plant in North America, the auto group announced Thursday.

The company said in the statement, "Canada is one logical option for the construction of a gigafactory in the region of North America," and it will be Volkswagen's first megafactory outside of Europe.

Volkswagen and the Canadian government signed a memorandum of understanding in August to secure key battery materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and graphite from Canada.
