Japan consiers tougher tax regulation on foreign game apps

Asian Tech Press (Nov 3) -- Japan is considering imposing stricter tax regulations on foreign game apps, with plans to levy consumption taxes on giants such as Google and Apple.

The Japanese government is mulling implementing stricter tax regulations for overseas game applications, with specific plans to impose consumption taxes on tech giants such as Google and Apple, which operate app stores containing game apps that can run on smartphones, Kyodo News reported on Wednesday.

The report noted that the reason the Japanese government is considering the above measures is that it is actually difficult for Japanese regulators to tax foreign game companies that should pay taxes.

Japan has deliberated revising its consumption tax law from fiscal year 2024, and will refer to overseas regulatory precedents in countries and regions such as the European Union, the United Kingdom and China.
