AMD to pay $6.5 billion to TSMC, GlobalFoundries, other suppliers for chip capacity

Asian Tech Press (May 9) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) intends to pay $6.5 billion to TSMC, GlobalFoundries and other suppliers for the rest of the year in order to compete for chip capacity.

Industry sources said that AMD has been increasing its market share in laptop, desktop and server processors after signing a contract with TSMC to produce its flagship processors.

AMD, Intel and Nvidia have had to adjust their strategies and product roadmaps to seize TSMC's advanced process capacity.

AMD's quarterly report revealed that the company must give a total of $6.5 billion in advance payments to TSMC, GlobalFoundries and other suppliers for the remainder of the year.

It followed separate news that Nvidia planned to pay more than $10 billion to ask TSMC for 5nm and more advanced processes for its upcoming GPUs.
